Mycenae is the 3000 year old city of King Agamemnon
which was destroyed by fire in 1100 BC. It was here at Mycenae that the famous German archaeologist Schliemann unearthed a most fabulous treasure within an untouched grave. The golden 'Mask of Agamemnon'
The famous 'Lion Gate' at Mycenae
[left] was found here, and Schliemann was convinced that he had, indeed, found the city from which the Trojan War was launched. That may be true, but scientists have since dated the findings from the grave and discovered that it is several hundred years older than the time of the Trojan War. Whatever the historical details, this is a very ancient site indeed.
