Islam began in the 7th century AD/CE when Prophet Muhammad [pbuh] received a series of revelations from Allah through the angel Jibreel. He became increasingly unpopular in his home town of Makkah when he repeated them to his fellow townspeople. He left with a group of followers and settled in Madinah. His eventual return to Makkah marks the beginning of Islam. Followers of Islam are called 'Muslims', and they worship in mosques and read the Qur'an, their holy book. Muslims pray five times a day, give money to charity and make an annual pilgrimage [hajj] to Makkah. Today there are over a billion Muslims in the world, with about 2 million living in the UK.

Note that Muslims will add PBUH after Prophet Muhammad's name. This means 'Peace Be Upon Him' and is a mark of respect. Note also that Muslims do not allow pictures or images of the Prophet to be made to prevent them from becoming objects of worship. Only God- Allah - may be worshipped.
