Sikhism was founded by Guru Nanak in about 1499 AD/CE in the Punjab area of India. At that time India was ruled by the Muslim Mughals and there was a great deal of conflict between the Muslims and the Hindus who lived there. Guru Nanak, who was born a Hindu, travelled as far way as Makkah preaching his message of peace and charity to all. He was succeeded by nine other gurus. |
