| THE VERGER | ||||
| One of the two vergers at St Mary's church is Mr Peter Flack, shown here in the picture. As well as being verger Mr Flack is also the Tower Captain, which means that he is in charge of the team of bell-ringers who ring the church's eight bells for services, weddings and other special occasions. | ||||
| The position of verger is a very ancient one, and involves, among other things, looking after the fabric of the church, showing people to their seats during weddings and funerals, etc, as well as making sure such occasions run smoothly. | ||||
| The verger also carries a staff of office [ Latin ' virga ', a rod or mace ] before a bishop. | ||||
