After Jesus prayed, Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve disciples, appeared. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders. Judas had taken thirty silver coins to guide the Priests to Jesus. And by that he had fulfilled the prophecy in the psalm 41:9 " Yea mine own familiar friend in whom I trusted which did eat of my bread hath lifted up his heel against me". |

Jesus was taken to the Chief Priest who condemned him as worthy of death. Jesus was slapped, beaten, spat at, and had his clothes torn. The next morning Jesus was taken to Pontius Pilate, and it was the governor's custom at the Feast to release a prisoner chosen by the crowd. So when the crowd had gathered, Pilate asked them, " Which one do you want me to release to you: Barabbas (who was a notorious prisoner) or Jesus who is called Christ?" Pontius Pilate did this because he knew that the Jews had handed Jesus to him because of envy. But the Chief Priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and have Jesus executed. So Pontius Pilate asked the crowds again, who they wanted him to release. And they asked for Barabbas. So Pilate asked, " What shall I do then with Jesus, who is called Christ??" The crowd answered by saying " CRUCIFY HIM!". So Pilate washed his hands and said," I am innocent of this man's blood", and he sent him to be crucified. The guards, who took nearly all of his clothing and ripped it up, took him,. They spat on him, they mocked him, and they set a crown of thorns on his head. |
